DETROIT (MARCH
19, 2019) – On
Tuesday morning, March 19, Detroit Pistons Point Guard Reggie Jackson paid the
students at Gardner Elementary School an hour-long visit to unveil his newest
‘Reggie’s Literacy Lounge’ reading room. The signature community outreach
program of Jackson’s DETermined to Assist Foundation, Reggie’s Literacy Lounges
are sports-themed reading oases built within Title I elementary schools that
provide students with access to hundreds of age-appropriate books. The Literacy
Lounge opened on Tuesday features comfortable beanbag chairs, extensive
shelving and more than 600 brand-new books.

Students at Gardner
Elementary enthusiastically greeted Jackson with a high-five line as he entered
the Literacy Lounge, indicating their excitement to have a local sports icon
visiting their school. Jackson reciprocated the excitement by spending the
morning reading one of his favorite children’s books to the students in
attendance. He and Kirby Gwen of 97.9 WJLB, who served as the program’s emcee,
also spoke at length about the importance of literacy and education.

“From a young age, I was encouraged to read by my brother, and it is one
of the greatest gifts I have ever been given,” said Jackson during the room’s
unveiling. “I want to help give these kids the gift of knowledge because that
is one gift that no one can take away from you."

The Gardner Elementary
Literacy Lounge was sponsored by The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit. Debra
Schultz, General Manager of The Westin Book, joined Jackson, Principal Shannon
Cummings and Assistant Principal LaTeresa Hurley for a ribbon-cutting
ceremony, officially opening the Literacy Lounge. All 259 students presently
enrolled at Gardner Elementary will have access to the fully-stocked
bookshelves, which feature books that appeal to all ages, interests, and
reading capabilities.

Tuesday’s unveiling marks
the eighth Literacy Lounge to be launched by Jackson and his DETermined to
Assist Foundation in the Detroit area since 2017. The eight Lounges have
combined to enrich the academic experience of more than 9,000 DPS students,
helping to foster a love of reading at a key a time in these students' development.
